The Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja Pedriatic Hospital in Holguin –a province in eastern Cuba- celebrated its 38th anniversary with the setting up of two new diagnostic machines, which will significantly improve the work of its personnel.

Child Jose Carlos Pena Estupiñán was the first patient to use the AUDIX instrument –
a Cuban-built equipment that will help to develop the auditory screening program in the province. Present at the inauguration of the modern machine was Jorge Cuevas Ramos, First Secretary of the Communist Party in the province of Holguin.

The National Program is aimed at the early detection of hearing loss and the prescription of treatment for children with hearing conditions.

The 540-bed hospital was also given a modern fluoroscope whose features include real-time moving images, storing of data results and applications in surgery.

The fluoroscope, which cost US $54,000.00, will contribute to develop conventional diagnostic techniques and will not only offer services to the people of Holguin, but also to patients from neighboring provinces.

In order to train the hospital staff and medical students, a computer lab equipped with twenty new computers and access to the Intranet was also opened.
