New President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences

luisvelazquezDr. Luis Velázquez Pérez was officially presented as the new president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences (ACC) this Saturday, after completing the process of analysis and approval by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).
The appointment will be effective from next December 18, when the delivery report of the presidency is debated.
In plenary, convened by the Board of Directors of the entity, the merits of the specialist and the reasons for which he was selected for the task were exalted. The work done by the outgoing president of the Academy, Ismael Clark Arxer, was also recognized.

Velázquez Pérez is a researcher and full-time professor, as well as a second degree specialist in Physiology and Neurology. In addition, it has reached the first and second category in Clinical Neurophysiology.

As a Regular Academic Member of the ACC, he was a member of the commission in the Biomedicine Section for the awards granted by the institution.

Velázquez Pérez has received nine awards and is the author of four books and two hundred scientific articles.
Until now, he had served as Director of the Center for the Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH) of Holguín, which has achieved scientific results of national and international impact after 15 years of work.

Since 2003, Velázquez Pérez is a Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power. He was Local Coordinator for Cuba of the Ibero-American Network for the study of Movement Disorders (Ataxias and Parkinson's) between 2009 and 2013. He also holds the national orders Carlos J. Finlay and Lázaro Peña and the Jesús Menéndez and Hazaña Laboral medals.

Regarding the appointment, some members of the ACC referred their considerations during the event.

"There is no doubt about the unconditional support, talent and dedication of Clark, and I have the same respect for Luis Velázquez, for the work he should do in the future," said Dr. Carlos Cabal Mirabal.
For his part, Dr. José Manuel Mateo Rodríguez pointed out that one of the challenges that the new director will have in coming periods will be to continue the interaction between the ACC and the Scientific Societies of the country.

Velázquez Pérez said that commitment to the youngest will be one of his priorities after taking the high position. "We will work with them from their training and recruitment to become scientists committed to their time, willing to sacrifice themselves for the development of their country; in such a way that we will have an army of researchers throughout the Island.”
