Holguín fencer Humberto Aguilera Luis will have a unique opportunity in the next few days to find his ticket to the Tokyo Olympics next summer.
Aguilera, who specializes in foil, will participate in the pre-Olympic tournament that will take place in San José, Costa Rica from April 29 to May 7, in which four other Cuban fencers will also participate in order to qualify for the Olympic Games to take place in the Japanese capital from July 23 to August 8.
"Only the first place gets a ticket to Tokyo and several important rivals will compete, but I never consider myself defeated and I always think and fight to be champion," Aguilera said last year in an interview for the local digital newspaper ahora.cu.
Aguilera won a gold medal in the international tournament in Guadalupe, and has also won four golds and a bronze in the Cerro Pelado Cup and has made important contributions to his province in national events.
In addition to these results in individual competitions, his contribution has been decisive on more than one occasion for Holguín to win the team foil victory.
If he won his ticket, Humberto would be the first Holguín fencer to compete in the Olympic Games.
