A predictive model for cardiovascular disease, designed using artificial intelligence, is one of the innovations being implemented in the health sector in Holguín aimed at improving care for these conditions, which are among the leading causes of death in Cuba.
The initiative, which surpasses traditional models by anticipating the first symptoms in at-risk population groups, can be applied in family doctor and nurse offices.
Among the advantages of this innovation are the elimination of therapeutic inertia associated with intermediate risk and its ease of understanding and management by basic healthcare facilities, although it does not replace clinical judgment, noted Jorge Vega Abascal, author of the research.
He explained that the use of artificial intelligence in the new tool allows for the incorporation of other predictors, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, which is not included in traditional methods for the early detection of cardiovascular diseases.
This protein, the specialist explained, detects chronic or low-grade inflammation, abdominal obesity, impaired fasting glucose, and triglycerides—risk factors in diagnosed cases—thus enabling personalized patient care.
The health sector in the province is implementing science and technological innovation as a strategy to maximize local capabilities in the face of the equipment and supply crisis the sector is experiencing, caused by the United States' hostile policy toward Cuba.
As part of this strategy, the use of educational software in human capital development, the psychosocial approach to addressing Autism Spectrum Disorder, and nursing care models in areas such as oncohematology are being promoted. (Source: ACN)
