Despite being boxing in Holguín, one of the most questioned disciplines for its insufficient results in the most recent decade, this sport ranks among the first with high historical results in this province.

Boxing marked an unprecedented event in Holguín, crowning three fighters in the same National Championship. That event occurred on 30 and 31 January 1989, 30 years ago, on the occasion of the 28th Playa Girón Tournament, held in Guantánamo.

Arnaldo Mesa

The Champions were Ricardo Díaz (Mayarí) in 60 kilos and the already deceased Arnaldo Mesa (municipality of Frank País), in 57 kilograms and Ángel Espinosa (Holguín) in the 7 kg.

In those years, in addition to the outstanding results of Holguín in the national team tournaments and Playa Girón, stood out the gold and silver medals and the world titles won by Espinosa in youth category, along with other Holguín boxers in PanAmericanos, Centrocaribe and other major events, while Arnaldo Mesa extended his performance until the 90s, which allowed him to win an Olympic silver, three world bronzes and two gold metals in the Pan American Games, among other significant results.

The 80s were, for the results achieved, the great decade of boxing in national and international events, although the most relevant individual results were reserved for the late 90s and early this century, with the performance of Mario Kindelán in the 60 kilograms, Olympic double champion and triple monarch of the world.
