Holguín’s Sergio González says goodbye to beach volleyball

The star beach volleyball player Sergio González Bayard took the retirement, according to statements to Jit by Jorge Sosa, national commissioner of that discipline.
 
It had already been decided that Cuba would not participate in the men's volleyball beach pre-Olympic tournament, since his competition partner Luis Enrique Reyes did not meet the requirements regarding the number of international matches.

Regarding Sergio, the manager said that “this outstanding player had difficulties to meet his training and suffered repeated weight gains at this stage. Due to his longevity in this sport, almost 15 years, he presented discomfort and injuries”.

Sergio González, 30 years old and a native of Tacajó, Báguanos, is the Cuban beach volleyball player with the highest results. In addition to his outstanding performance in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, he managed to access the World Tour and accumulated a large number of outstanding performances in the Norceca Circuit.

He won gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico-2014 and Barranquilla, Colombia-2018. He also won bronze in the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada-2015 and achieved fifth places in those championships in Guadalajara-2011 and Lima-2019.

In Holguín, Sergio was the athlete of the year in collective disciplines in 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018. He was chosen among the top ten in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2017. He was Holguín's best in non-individual discipline in 2019.
