Some 20 Holguin athletes have qualified for the Central American and Caribbean Games of Barranquilla, Colombia, to be held from July 19 to August 3 this year.
Leuris Pupo, champion in fast pistol modality and decathlete Leonel Suarez, World and Olympic medalist are among the qualified athletes for the event. The province of Holguin will be represented in the modalities of weightlifting and cycling with Juan Columbié (105 Kg) and Víctor Manuel Quiñones (94Kg) and Alejandro Parra and Idaris Cervantes, respectively.
Also, badminton player Taimara Oropesa and handball players Noelvis Robles and Ángel Rivero will repeat in a Cuban delegation to Centrocaribe, while softball players Geidis García, Luis Raúl Domínguez and the experienced Maylín Sánchez will be also representing the northeastern territory.
The Holguin delegation will be also composed of Gretel Carbonel in fencing, Danay Utria, in gymnastics, Taimara Robles in taekwondo and Dainier Infante in sailing, among others.
There are still some athletes from this territory who should seek the classification for the Games like wrestler Yudennis Alpajón. The Central American and Caribbean Games held in Veracruz, Mexico, the Cuban delegation was composed of 14 Holguin athletes, who contributed seven gold, five silvers and five bronze medals.
