Science sector in Holguín carries out actions for soil protection

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the province of Holguín carries out actions aimed to the protection of soils, as part of the strategy to preserve this natural resource and the implementation of the Life Task State's plan to counter climate change.
Norkis Ochoa, a specialist from this institution, told the ACN that there are five soil demonstration polygons in the territory where sustainable agriculture practices are developed, focused on protecting the environment and products resistant to changes in temperature and intense drought.
She added that in these areas, indicators of saline intrusion and water sampling in coastal areas are measured, one of the priorities of this branch given the climate variability in the current world.
The territory also has a forest index of more than 39 percent, which represents an area of more than 356 thousand hectares, including natural forests, among which stand out the hydrographic basins, protected areas and other prioritized ecosystems, Ochoa explained.
She indicated that the province also prioritizes the recovery of areas affected by mining activity, one of the main economic lines of Cuba, through which some 25 hectares have been rehabilitated from June 2019 to the present.
The Life Task includes more than 70 Cuban coastal municipalities and is aimed at minimizing saline intrusion, the rise in sea level, the incidence of high intensity natural phenomena, among other factors associated with climate change, of which six correspond to the Holguín territory.
