Specialists and community leaders discussed the main advances in the health of people with albinism and the sociocultural approaches to this condition during the Congress of Thought, which is held annually in the city of Holguín as part of the Ibero-American Culture Festival.
The national director of the Cuban Community of People with Albinism (CPAC), Iliana Pupo Herrera, highlighted that 43 percent of the people with albinism registered in Cuba resides in the province of Holguín, and that a high number of illnesses are detected in the same individual.
She specified that the community participates in the identification of 400 people with albinism in the province, most of whom live in the municipality of Báguano, as well as in monitoring associated illnesses and providing individualized treatment for conditions that limit their social development.
For her part, Katherine Batista Ochoa, National Deputy Director of Dermatology at Piel de Coral, explained the success of using the injectable medication HeberFERON in albino patients. Of the 15 treated, 14 achieved a satisfactory response.
She added that the consultations foster a sense of self-acceptance, contributing to the elimination of stereotypes and promoting the use of natural skin products, including medicinal plants.
Piel de Coral is recognized among the countries with best medical practices in the care of people with albinism and has been represented in the preparation of the dossier for Latin America and in the signing of the agreements by the nations requesting the inclusion of sunscreen as a medication.
The Ministry of Public Health explains on the Infomed website that albinism is a hereditary and congenital disorder characterized by the absence of pigmentation (melanin) in the skin, hair, and eyes, which causes sensitivity to the sun and intense light, visual impairment, and predisposes individuals to skin cancer.
