The preparations for the upcoming sugar harvest in the province of Holguín are currently focused on repairing the means and equipment for the sugarcane cutting and transportation processes and on the readiness of the four sugar mills that will enter into operation in the upcoming 2020-21 season.

The works in the industrial areas of the mills are aimed at conditioning the boiler areas, the most affected during the last harvest season, said to the Cuban News Agency Reina Salermo, director of the Sugar Company Holguín.

She explained that works are mainly carried out in the Urbano Noris industry, one of the largest sugar producers in the territory, as the greatest interruptions during the previous harvest occurred in that industrial area.

There, work is carried out with rationality based on an adequate use of the essential technical means in each of the areas so that the mill is ready for the start of sugar processing operations, as planned for the month of December, Salermo added.

Four of the five sugar mills existing in Holguín will enter into operation, except for the Loynaz Hechavarría in the municipality of Cueto. The sugarcane belonging to that area will be ground by other mills, as part of the strategy to take advantage of all the availability of this raw material for the benefit of the national economy.

The Urbano Noris, Cristino Naranjo, Fernando de Dios and López-Peña industries, located in the municipalities of Cacocum and Báguano, respectively, will operate during the 2020-21 harvest.

In addition to the preparations in the industrial areas, Salermo pointed out, the harvest preparation program focuses on the setting up of the combined sugarcane means.
