Given the appearance in western Cuba of new positive cases of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, the province of Holguín reinforces the surveillance of national travelers, as part of the measures to contain the pandemic, with more of four thousand confirmed in the country.

Dr. Denis Sarmiento, acting director of the command post of the Provincial Directorate of Public Health, pointed out to the Cuban News Agency that currently 624 of these people are under surveillance, 266 of them from Havana, the territory with the highest numbers infected in recent months.

He added that travelers from Artemisa, Mayabeque, Matanzas and Villa Clara are also being monitored and performed a rapid test to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2, a pathogen with more than 18 million infections worldwide.

Sarmiento said that the protocols established for the monitoring and surveillance of symptoms through primary health care are maintained, with the existing work teams in the family doctor and nurse's offices.

At the moment there are no international travelers under surveillance, but conditions have been created for their isolation in the event of the arrival of a humanitarian flight, he said.

Holguín has more than 90 autochthonous cases confirmed since the first reports of COVID-19 in Cuba last March and is one of the Cuban provinces with favorable indicators; despite this PCR studies continue (reaction chain of polymerase) to population groups at risk.
