The Center of Studies for Arid Agrosystem of the University of Holguín boosts various projects related to agriculture and livestock, aimed at contributing to economic and social development based on the existing potentialities in each agricultural area of the eastern territory.

Alexander Salgado, director of the Center, said that the main productive areas in the municipality of Calixto García are included in the project in order to contribute to a better use of the soils in that region.

Among the researches, the mechanisms of sustainable financing and land management in dryland and grazing forest ecosystems on a local farm aim to achieve changes in livestock genetics and the quartering of the land, as well as the sowing of grass and forage.

It also includes the strengthening the capacities for the production and conservation of animal food in livestock business groups of that same municipality, which seeks to create a seed bank to guarantee the feeding of livestock during the dry season and thus avoid affectations in the production of meat and milk, parallel to the transformations of the productive plots and the workers training.

The Holguín University also extends its research projects to the cultivation of sugarcane, mainly in the municipalities of Urbano Noris and Mayarí, through the study of the physico-chemical properties related to water retention in vertic glei soils affected by the salinity in agro-systems of this crop with the purpose of increasing yields in those lands.

The Center of Studies for Arid Agrosystem of the Holguín University has links with various entities in the eastern province such as the AZCUBA Sugar Group and the Cuban Association of Animal Production.
