The main advances and lines of nanotechnology research in Cuba were presented in the city of Holguin, as part of the Expociencia 2020 event that takes place here until the 28th of February.

Dr.Sc. Yorexis Gonzalez, director of research at the Center for Advanced Studies, said that these advances are applied in agriculture, medicine, metal extraction, food production, construction materials, energy, automotive industry and the reduction of the impact of climate change, among other areas.

He pointed out that this technology allows obtaining more resistant materials used in the construction of solar panels, buildings, the production of medicines, improving water quality and reducing the use of fertilizers, which are highly expensive in the international market.

The use of nanotechnology in Cuba has led to the design of diagnosis devices used to provide more effective treatment for patients with cerebrovascular diseases and malignant tumors, among others, which improves the quality of life of patients, he said.

The advances, he added, are also used in biotechnology to obtain antiretroviral drugs and vaccines, which constitutes one of Cuba's main potentials in that area.

Participants in the event also presented the challenges of the territorial science and innovation system in Holguin and the behavior of sociodemographic variables in the territory.

Expociencia has been developing since 2008 with permanent headquarters in the Expo-Holguin Fairgrounds, with the aim of making visible the scientific results in conferences, workshops, book presentations and scientific exchange.

This year’s edition is dedicated to the 300 years of the founding of Holguin as a town, to be celebrated on April 4, which is why the different organizations and sectors of the province undertake a comprehensive program of remodeling and maintenance in economic, social, cultural and recreational facilities of the city, with more than 300 thousand inhabitants.
