Holguín boosts biogas use in agriculture

The main potentials in the manufacture and use of biogas as part of the strategy to expand the use of renewable energy sources are included among the priorities of the agricultural sector in Holguín.
Jorge Balceira, a researcher and professor at the University of Holguín, said that the use of this gas is an alternative for the use of the waste generated by pig farming, which has progressively increased in the eastern territory.
The specialist indicated that this type of fuel, obtained in the agricultural units, can also be used in irrigation systems, the generation of electric energy and fertilizer in the fields, although its greater use is destined towards pig units, in addition to contributing to the protection of the environment.
In the eastern territory there are several experiences in the use of this component with encouraging results, such as those obtained by producer Eliades Ochoa in the community of Aguas Claras, belonging to the main municipality, which provides electricity to some 14 homes in the surrounding area of the areas dedicated to swine activity.
There are around 700 plants dedicated to this purpose throughout the country located in state and private breeding centers, which contributes to compliance with the Guidelines approved in the VI Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, in 2011.
