Obtaining income through an increasingly large export of goods and services is imposed as a primary goal for the economy in Holguín, a territory that has a significant impact on Cuba, as the first three exportable items of the Caribbean country are produced here: nickel, sugar and tobacco.

This was stated by Jorge Cuevas Ramos, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in meeting with the businessmen of the eastern province.

Cuevas noted that every effort should be made to increase the number of exportable items, which today amount to 38, and raise revenues for that concept, which in September were breached by more than 20 percent.

He pointed out that promoting exportable items in all sectors of the country is an essential condition to sustain the social work of the Revolution, as it is essential to focus on import substitution with lucidity and in an organized way so that the needs of the country are really met.

Participants discussed the negative balances of the territory in sectors such as agriculture, commerce, the food industry and the energy and mining sector, among others.

Cuevas was interested in knowing particularities of the nickel production in the municipality of Moa; preparations for the next sugar harvest to begin in mid-November; and on the conditions for the production of tobacco, a line that must be increased because it has a high demand internationally.

The member of the Secretariat of the PCC stated that the province, despite the difficulties the country has faced, has maintained the vitality in the functioning of the economy, but stressed that more discipline and rigor is required to conclude with better results the current year 2019, time in which everything possible should be done to reverse the current budget deficit in the territory and some situations with receivable and payable accounts.

He referred to the need for a new awakening in state enterprises, give priority to the cultivation of land, make progress in the policy approved for the housing program and put science in place to solve problems of the economy.

Cuevas stressed that we cannot ignore the escalation of the U.S. policy towards Cuba during Trump’s administration, which has deployed an incredible financial persecution, sustained by 130 hostile measures that hinder the country's progress, so that perfecting the economy is a task that cannot be postponed.

The meeting was also presided over by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, first secretary of the Party in Holguín and Julio César Estupiñán, president of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power.
