Grenada's ambassador to Cuba, Claris Charles, said in Holguín that her country will participate in 2020 in activities for the 300th anniversary of the founding of this eastern Cuban city.
Cuba and Granada have good cultural relations since the early twentieth century, many people from Granada came to the island to work in the sugar fields and had descendants here, in different provinces, the diplomat told Prensa Latina.
The dean of the diplomatic corps of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) traveled to this city, located about 734 kilometers east of the capital of Cuba, to participate in the 25th Ibero-American Culture Festival, which concluded last Wednesday.
In 1979, after the Revolution in Guyana, Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, who loved Holguín, established diplomatic relations with Cuba and today we maintain excellent relations, she said.
The Grenadians adore the Cubans and the Cubans the Grenadians, said the ambassador in visit to Casa de Iberoamérica, located in this province because here took place in 1492 the socio-cultural meeting of greater historical impact between inhabitants of the island and Europeans.
Charles recognized Cuba's government's willingness to collaborate for years with her country in important fields such as health.
She also recalled and regretted the death of 24 Cuban workers who worked at the airport in 1983, during the American invasion of Granada.
Over the years, we have had Cuban doctors, engineers and nurses working in Granada and, in addition, Cuba has trained doctors and professionals from other native areas of my country, she said.
We hope to continue expanding our relations not only with Havana, but with the different provinces of the Greater of the Antilles and next year we intend to participate in the activities for the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city of Holguín, she added.
Likewise, we want to take advantage of the Ibero-American Culture Festival to meet in October 2020 with all the people who have worked in Guyana as collaborators, she concluded. / With information from Prensa Latina
