Farmers involved in the current cold season planting campaign in the province of Holguin are commitment to plant, from now until the end of the stage in February, about 4,500 hectares of different food lines above the achieved in the previous period, starting from better conditions in irrigation systems.

This responds to the measures implemented by entities of the agricultural sector of the eastern territory, in response to the guidelines of the top management of the Cuban Government to increase agricultural production through better use of land and existing resources.

The planting program will cover about 33 thousand hectares, mostly in the cultivation of food and grains, with beans prevailing in the latter line, said Carlos Alberto Ricardo Ledea, member of the Board of Directors in the provincial delegation of agriculture.

Accroding Ricardo Ledea, the producing entities will have irrigation systems to benefit more than seven thousand hectares, an area still below to achieve the required yields, but it is a sign of a start on that important area of agriculture in Holguin, by increasing investments in crop areas, both in areas benefited by the East-West water transfer and other territories.

The province of Holguin is distinguished by its potential in agricultural production, mainly from lines such as bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes and grains, especially beans, which has been affected in recent times by the climate adversities, due to the excess of rain in the middle of the periods of growth of plants.

The productions grow in most of the lines, but there are dissatisfactions on the part of the consumers, who think that the main problem is in the high prices, mainly in the points of sale of the private sector.
The planting plans grow every year and the effort made by the state is recognized, but there´s still the need to increase productions in order to fulfill the demands of the people.
