Holguin cultivates oysters

The cultivation of oysters, a mollusk rich in proteins, is a source of employment for those who, from the oyster farm, make this task one of the economic activities of the municipality of Rafael Freyre, in the province of Holguín. Enrique Joaquín Rodrigo, worker of the entity, commented that the collectors are located very close to the mangrove for 45 days, necessary time for the larvae of the oyster to be fixed to them.
After that time, he explained, are taken to the lines or tendales that are located longitudinally, between eight and 10 meters of the mangrove, providing the volume of water required by each collector for the growth and development of the mollusk in an accelerated manner.
After three months, he said, the oyster reaches the size of marketing and, from that period, each collector is made the first harvest of the four that tolerates each attachment.
According to Ecured, among the mollusks that make up Cuba's marine fauna is the mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae Guilding, 1828. This species is of importance for the entire Caribbean area.
