The cultivation of rice, an extended crop in the province of Holguín in recent times, is among the priorities of the comprehensive agricultural company Guatemala, located in the municipalities of Mayarí, Cueto and Frank País, in the eastern territory.
The incorporation of rice production responds to the economic objectives of the country to increase the harvest of those crops that allow to reduce food imports, assumed each year by the Cuban State.
Abel Sánchez, director of the company, said to the Cuban News Agency that with this purpose, extensive investments in irrigation systems are carried out in the production units, taking advantage of the potential offered by the East-West Water Transfer.
The rice production project, the largest in the province of Holguín, will cover an area of about three thousand hectares, considering the fertility of the lands for this type of crop and the technologies for irrigation, Sanchez added.
He noted that the production of the grain is gradually increasing here, where investments are carried out to turn it into the main rice production area of Holguín, with the purpose of harvesting in the future no less than 10 thousand tons annually destined to the consumption of the population.
Along with rice, the company Guatemala also boosts the production of food items such as beans, vegetables, fruit, coffee and livestock.
