Holguin Shows Favorable Results in Sugar Cane Planting

Photo: ACNWorkers involved in the sugar cane planting program show favorable results from January to date, while getting ready to undertake in April the largest commitment in the first quarter of the year as part of the preparations for the forthcoming harvest.
Miguel Martinez, a specialist in this crop at the Holguin Sugar Company, told the ACN that so far in 2019, workers of the branch planted more than 1,500 hectares, an area that places the territory in a favorable balance of the plan since January to date in that important indicator of the national economy.
“From the point of view of the volume that corresponds to the province in the first semester of the year, it has special significance due to the fact that they have been planted in areas benefited by irrigation systems, which is decisive in the levels of germination and its subsequent growth,” he said.
Next month, he added, the groups dedicated to this work should plant about a thousand hectares more and create the conditions for May, the decisive period in the planting plan of sugar cane for the spring stage, which extends in Cuba between January and June.
Martinez said that this purpose will be feasible to achieve, since there are enough levels of land ready and in process of preparation in the five Holguin entities dedicated to the cultivation of cane along with the working forces demanded for that purpose.
Sugarcane production in Holguin is concentrated in the areas of the sugar mills Fernando de Dios, Lopez-Peña, Loynaz Hechavarria, Urbano Noris and Cristino Naranjo, these last two being the ones with the highest production capacity in the eastern territory. / ACN
