Three teenagers die due to river flooding in Mayarí, Holguín

Three teenagers died on Sunday after a flash flood of the Guaro river, in the municipality of Mayarí, in the in the Cuban eastern province of Holguín.


The events occurred around 4 o'clock in the afternoon in the community known as Guaro Cinco and caused the death of 16-year-old Daniela Lizet Chacón Ricardo, Sheila Silva Sánchez and Alejandro Masó González, both 18 years old.

Similarly, the other adolescents and young victims of the unfortunate event remain under specialized public health surveillance.

Local authorities attended the scene and supported the medical assistance provided at the Guaro polyclinic and at the Mártires de Mayarí hospital, while they exchanged with the relatives of the deceased and injured.

The tasks of control and investigation of the events are assumed by teams of the National Revolutionary Police.

According to preliminary investigations, about 17 young people were involved in the event, enjoying a birthday party with friends, on a sunny day and with no apparent threat of rain.

When trying to leave the place and while crossing the bridge, with low visibility of the water current, they were hit by an atypical flood of the Guaro river.

The first rescue operations were carried out by the injured themselves, given the remoteness of the place, and after the request for help, other residents of Guaro and members of the fire department in Mayarí attended.
