In Holguín, first hotel in Cuba with UV-C disinfection technology

The Gran Muthu Almirante Beach Hotel, five-star category located in Guardalavaca, Holguín province, is the first tourist facility in Cuba to have ultraviolet technology (UV-C + OZONE) for the disinfection of surfaces exposed to the COVID-19 virus.
Disinfection using this method was discovered in 1878 and is usually used in the sterilization of articles in entities such as hospitals, airplanes and offices. Currently, it has been incorporated into the actions to confront the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide.
Gipsy Hernández, deputy director of the hotel, told the ACN that this type of ultraviolet ray is effective in destroying the genetic material of microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria.
This tourist facility, she said, has five different formats of UV-C lamps to sanitize both closed spaces and small items, once the service to vacationers has started as of July 1.
From the arrival of visitors in the hotel, it will be carry out the disinfection of documents, identity card or passport, reservation, cash and luggage in a room enabled for this purpose, explained Osmel Moreno, head of quality and hygiene of the Almirante.
In this regard, workers were trained on the basis of the established protocol to avoid damage to the skin or eyes, due to the intensity of these UV-C rays.
The use of the ultraviolet ray equipment will extend to closed spaces within the hotel such as rooms, restaurants, kitchens, gymnasium, shops, offices and warehouses, he added.
The MGM Muthu Hotels hotel chain has seven tourist facilities in the country, of which, in the midst of the current epidemiological context conditioned by the pandemic, only one remains open in Cayo Guillermo, Jardines del Rey, located in the central region of the island.
Cuba is the first and only tourist destination promoted by this chain in the Caribbean area for almost three years, while other hotel facilities are located in countries such as France, England, Spain and Scotland.
