The books “Memorias desde el Sur” and “Guayza, la niña taína”, by local writers Víctor Aguilera Nonell and Juan Guarch Rodríguez, respectively, are among the books to be launch this year by La Mezquita publishing house of the Union of Historians of Cuba in the eastern province.
Founded in June 2008 the publishing house owes its name to a hill called “La Mezquita de Colón” belonging to the Maniabón orographic system in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, which according to Antonio Núñez Jiménez, constitutes “fundamental geomorphological factors to determine the first Columbian landing”.
Hiram Pérez, director of La Mezquita, explained to !ahora! digital newspaper that six other texts are also ready for publication in SoyGraf, Graphic Impressions, belonging to the José Miró Argenter Polygraphic Institute, in charge of the printing process.
Pérez noted that the editorial seal was established mainly to promote the historiographic studies of the membership and thus contribute to the qualitative development of Cuban historical science from the disciplinary diversity, thematic and historical periods.
He added that it is inclusive of different genres such as individual and collective monographs, life histories - regional or local - testimonies, memories of scientific events, compilation of essays, bibliographic reviews, archival documents and catalogs.
The texts should preferably be unpublished, the results of rigorous research, endorsed by an adequate and verifiable referential apparatus, explained the also director of the Office of Monuments and Historic Sites, and noted that reissues will only exceptionally be accepted, while the editorial group will have up to 90 days to accept or not the proposal.
The books " Un rostro local para la arqueología cubana " and " Los hombres de los cascos de acero y los fusiles de Springfield: documentos del escuadrón 17 (Baracoa 1957-1958)", by the National History Prize winner José Abreu Cardet, in co-authorship with Roberto Valcárcel Rojas in the first text and in the second with Marilú Ural de Canssio and Alejandro Hartman Matos, historian from Baracoa, are the result of collaboration with other publishers - in this case - Ediciones Nuevo Mundo from the United States.
Institution of Honor of the Sociocultural Management for Development Career of the University of Holguín since 2016, La Mezquita has among other recognitions the Provincial Prize of the Cuban Academy of Sciences with the book "Indios en Holguín" in 2014 and three awards from the “José Luciano Franco” Historiographic Criticism for the works “La virgen cubana en Nipe y Barajagua” (2013), “La ruta holguinera hacia el capitalismo” (2015), and “Calixto García en la guerra grande” (2020).
