The international Nutrivida project, led by the World Food Programme (WFP), aims to improve the nutrition of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children up to 11 years old in Cuba by supporting social institutions and local agri-food systems in six municipalities across the country.

Funded by the Government of Canada, the program is initially being implemented in areas of Mayabeque and Holguín. It covers municipalities such as Santa Cruz, Bejucal, San José de las Lajas, Mayarí, Moa, and the provincial capital of Holguín.

One of the project’s main actions is to support social protection institutions, such as maternity homes and special schools. This includes improving hygiene and food preparation conditions through the provision of equipment like solar panels, refrigerators, and kitchen utensils.

In the agricultural sector, the project promotes training for producers and provides supplies to cooperatives. The goal is to increase food production and ensure a stable supply for institutions that serve vulnerable populations.

Additionally, it encourages urban and suburban agriculture, especially in areas with little farming tradition, and makes use of fertile lands such as those in the Mayarí Valley. The project also integrates key sectors like health, education, and agriculture, promotes gender equality, and contributes to food security in Cuba. (Source: ACN)
