The Holguín Hearing Center continues providing care to children with hearing loss despite Cuba’s current energy crisis, which is consequence of the United States’ hostile policy toward the country.

Despite the challenges, the institution maintains its key services, including the sale of batteries, the adjustment of hearing devices, and the rehabilitation of children with cochlear implants.

According to speech therapist Yadiannis Quintana Noris, the center adjusts its medical appointment schedules based on electricity service hours. This allows priority to be given to vulnerable individuals and patients living in more remote municipalities, ensuring that all cases receive timely attention despite existing limitations.

Due to the tightening of the economic blockade, the institution faces difficulties in acquiring essential materials and equipment, such as molds and hearing prostheses for cochlear implant users. Nevertheless, alternative solutions have been pursued to maintain the continuity of services and ensure ongoing treatment and diagnostics.

In addition to children, the center also provides care for adults with hearing impairments caused by age, accidents, or other disorders.

Despite energy restrictions, audiometries and diagnostic procedures continue to be performed to address hearing loss, which may have congenital or acquired causes and significantly impacts communication and quality of life for both children and adults.
