The Haydée Santamaría Special School in Holguín, only of its kind in the province, is dedicated to improving the quality of life of children with autism. Its work focuses on developing social, communication, and behavioral skills.
According to its director, Mairet Guerrero Ricardo, the center serves as a transitional space where students acquire abilities that allow them to continue their education in line with their individual capacities. The goal is to support their progressive development and inclusión.
Since many of the students are nonverbal, alternative methods such as equine therapy and visual aids are used. These tools make learning easier and help strengthen the children’s interpersonal relationships.
After an evaluation period by a multidisciplinary team, a combined education model is implemented. Students spend part of the week in general or special education schools and the rest at Haydée Santamaría, which helps promote their adaptation.
Care is personalized and tailored to each child’s needs, allowing for motor skill development and compensation for difficulties associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Founded in 2015 and with 24 students, the school fosters inclusion, intersectoral collaboration, and family and community participation. (Source: ACN)
