Graciela Pérez, specialist of the Meteorological Center of the eastern city, said that the program includes the territories of Cacocum, Báguano, Urbano Noris, Frank País and Calixto García, which are vulnerable to this natural phenomenon.

According to Pérez, the project also includes the hydrometeorological monitoring of drought, the dissemination of this information, the estimation of vulnerability of food production at local level and a response methodology based on risk management.

These tools include reports for their publication in the press and exchanges among monitoring agencies, which contributes to expand local capacities to cope with extreme weather events, she noted.

Pérez said the program is also a contribution to the Life Task, a plan developed by the Cuban State to reduce the effects of climate change on the coastal settlements of the Caribbean island.

The Meteorological Center of Holguín provides general services such as certifications for losses to high intensity atmospheric events and climate zoning maps, as well as bulletins with information on evolution and perspective of drought, which are part of this project. / ACN
