The economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba has a negative impact in the development of research projects at the University of Holguín, which are affected by the lack of resources and necessary goods.

For this reason, the center of high studies is forced to seek other ways to purchase the equipment required in the realization of the laboratory practices or in the design of functional prototypes in order to contribute to the socioeconomic development programs in the province.

Also, some markets deny the sale of a certain piece or device for having links with US companies, which leads to agreements with companies geographically located far from the Island to purchase them, which often influences the price and quality.

Ana de Lourdes Torralbas, general director of the University, said that the production of electricity protectors, one of the research patents held by the teaching institution, is slowed by the lack of basic raw materials restricted by the US measures.

“The lack of technologies prevents many of the graduates from engineering degrees to do their master's or doctoral thesis in areas external to their specialty, such as pedagogy, humanities, letters,” said Rolando Simeón, director of the Center for Studies of Assisted Computer to Design and Manufacturing.
