The eastern province of Holguín, with more than one million inhabitants and the third largest population of Cuba, registered in 2018 favorable indicators in the different economic sectors and services in general, in the midst of resource limitations in some branches.

The reduction of infant mortality below four deaths per thousand live births, the expansion of the computerization programs of society, extended even to intricate areas of the Turquino Plan, and the total coverage of the teaching programs in the different educational levels, are among the results achived.

In the educational sector, it highlights the incorporation of new degrees in the University of Holguín through short cycles courses, while the health sector implemented a major investment program, mainly in the main hospitals of the province.

In economic terms, although the business system did not fulfill all the indicators, the territory reached over 200 million pesos of surplus and at the same time expanded the exportable items as part of the country's strategy to help reduce the levels of importation in certain productive areas and services, including nickel that reached a 120 percent compliance in the commercialization of its productions in the international market.

According to Idania Ricardo, vice president of the Provincial Administration Council, the main efforts were directed to reduce costs in general, increase efficiency and give an adequate use to available resources in each sphere, which still demands greater rigourosness from respective administrations to achieve in full these indicators.

To this is added a better use of the financial resources allocated to local development projects, which already has about 60 programs in Holguín, almost double of those existing two years ago.

In the agricultural sector, the province showed progress in several branches, including the production of honey with more than 500 tons for export, the progressive advance in coffee harvest, expansion of the tobacco and rice cultivation areas, and the delivery over the plan of almost one million liters of milk to the Dairy Industry.

Among the investments in construction, it stood out the works of the East-West Water Transfer, which benefits the irrigation systems in areas dedicated to the cultivation of sugarcane, rice, tobacco and water supply to the population, mainly from the city of Holguín, through the canal systems to the Gibara dam and also to the Guardalavaca tourist pole.

Roberto Pupo Verdecía, general manager of the engineering services company in charge of the work, told the ACN that of the 96 million pesos invested in the different projects of this type in the country, more than 70 million were allocated to the water transfer, the highest amount registered in an annual period since its implementation in 2007.

On the other hand, workers of the Hydraulic Resources Company invested more than 38 million pesos for the improvement of the infrastructure to guarantee the water supply to the population, while the road company advanced in the construction of the Banes-Nipe, Cortadera-Antilla and Moa a Baracoa roads, as well as the expansion of the one that joins the city of Holguín with the Frank País García international airport.

On the other hand, the Electricity Company extended its services to the entire population, including those located in areas of difficult Access belonging to the Turquino Plan, with alternative means such as generators, mini hydroelectric plants and photovoltaic panels, in addition to the national electricity network.

Within the culture sector, Holguín distinguished with the development of important national and international events such as Romerías de Mayo and Fiesta de la Cultura Iberoamericana, among others.

Tourism showed the vitality of its investment programs in the expansion of hotel capacities and protection of its beaches, while CITMA highlighted by the impementation of actions linked to the Life Task, promoted by that organism in fulfillment of the plan of the Cuban state for the confrontation to the climatic change.

Holguín showed progress in the different programs during 2018, but it requires greater rigor and exigency in those that fell short of their projections, both for reasons of resources, and for lack of a better organization and proper administration of the resources, as recognized by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in the main rally for the 60th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution, held in the municipality of Moa. / ACN
