Holguín Increases Beach Rehabilitation Efforts

The maintenance and rehabilitation of beaches was among the priorities of the Ministry of Tourism in Holguín in 2018, as part of the implementation of the Cuban state's plan "Tarea Vida" for confronting climate change.
Raciel Rivero, specialist of Quality and Environment in the Holguín Tourism Branch, higlighted among the most significant actions carried out, the reforestation of the beaches and surrounding lands with species native to the coastal area and the elimination of invasive varieties.
The action, carried out jointly with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the eastern province, helped to revitalize several of the urbanized areas for tourist use, according to "Tarea Vida", he said.
He pointed out that in the hotel facilities anthropization enables the marine environment to experience negative variations, mainly in terms of the decrease in plant and animal populations.
For that reason, he explained, training actions aimed at Cuban and foreign managers, workers and visitors are carried out in these places throughout the year.
According to Rivero, the 2018 agenda also included sanitation work in most of the beaches for tourist use and the remodeling of establishments that by their structure and complexion deteriorated the coastal area.
The work carried out by the different Tourism agencies in Holguín in the conservation of the coasts and the environmental management of tourism contributed to the sector obtaining the National Environmental Recognition, and the Brisas Guardalavaca Hotel, the National Environment Award.
The Tarea Vida plan, approved by the Council of Ministers on April 25, 2017, focuses on the protection of the marine environment, as it is one of the means capable of cushioning the impact of waves caused by natural phenomena.
