On November 4, 1968, it came true the dream of residents in the eastern province of Holguín and one of the requests made to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz, on February 26, 1959, to initiate university studies programs in the territory.

Reynaldo Velázquez, rector of the University of Holguín, said that this center of high studies had an important leap on September 4, 2015, the day that marked the 70th anniversary of Fidel Castro's admission to the University of Havana, coinciding with the formalization of the integration process of the educational institutions of that type in Holguín.

Since that date, he said, the University, despite having several headquarters, joined as one and began to glimpse systemically its potential and to take better advantage of human and material resources.

This institution has 49 degrees, many of which are accredited and others close to achieving that category as a sign of the increase in the culture of quality in the house of higher education, which favors a better positioning of the academy in Cuba and the world, said Velázquez.

Its graduate programs were considerably expanded, he said, our Master degrees satisfy the needs of trained professionals, and the specialties for Doctorates have been extended to seven areas of knowledge.

The University has seven study centers, which promote research and projects of the Social, Natural, Agricultural, Education and Business Sciences, Engineering and Physical Culture.

The CAD / CAM center related to computer design and manufacturing, said the rector, has achieved important results that contribute the comprehensive development plans of the province and the mitigation of risks in the face of natural disasters.

The Holguín University also carries out actions of socialization of science and innovation, it has strengthened the Institutional Communication and increased internationalization, from the signing of new foreign cooperation agreements, he added. / AIN
