The 13th Evaluation of the Local Production and Sale of Construction Materials Program begins today in the province of Holguín, aimed at examining the manufacture, quality and commercialization of these key elements for housing construction.

Technicians, specialists, inspectors and directors of companies will focus on 16 basic products, with priority for subsidized cells and compliance with national supplies, especially cement and steel, said to the Cuban News Agency Tomás Vázquez Henríquez, head of the Program of the Ministry of Construction (MICONS).

He said that the analysis will center on the materialization of the estimates in aggregates, wall and floor elements, Sandino housing system (prefabricated), solid covers, blocks, countertop and concrete carpentry, washing site, concrete tanks, low carbon cement LC-3, paints, plastic tubes and connections.

The production and sale of pipes and clay connections, plastic electrical boxes, water keys, ironwork and electrical outlet, with their quality certification included, will also be evaluated, with which an export process could be started, the official said.

He added that on this occasion national inspectors will intervene, along with General Directorate of Housing, the MICONS and the Ministry of Domestic Trade.

During the first six months of 2017, in most of the territories, local production and sale of construction materials experienced progress in the creation of capacities, quality, management and marketing, expalined Vázquez Henríquez.

An essential objective of the program is to take advantage of the potential of raw materials existing in the region and increase the use of industrial cement, through the conversion of a part of the Portland 350, high strength, into the low carbon LC- 3, which incorporates calcined clay and limestone dust.

The low carbon cement is a novel formulation developed by a technical team of the Center for Research and Development of Structure and Materials, the Central University Marta Abreu of Las Villas, and the Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne, Switzerland.

It replaces part of the clinquer - one of the most expensive components of that line - by a combination of calcined clay, known as Metakaolin, and calcium carbonate in the form of limestone.

According to the specialists, it allows tripling the current levels of clinquer substitution, achieved by the cement industry in Cuba, to produce one of similar resistance and superior to the penetration of agents such as chlorides, which cause damage to the concrete.

With this initiative, Cuba is included in the list of countries that seek ecological alternatives for the production of construction materials.

It also appears in the projections of the program the increase of the metallic molds used in the elaboration of concrete tanks, for the water containers.
