Hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, canals and bridges make up the water transfer projects underway in the country. On completion, they will benefit some 400,000 hectares of land.

As part of the first stage of the East-West water diversion project, construction on the conduits linking the Colorado and Naranjo and the Nipe and Gibara reservoirs was completed. Thus the supply of more than 28 million cubic meters of water to the city of Holguin has been guaranteed, while more than four million more are directed to the tourist resorts of the north of the province.

With the completion of the diversion between the Mayari and Biran reservoirs, an essential task of the second stage of the project, the irrigation of just over 2,055 hectares of the 12,800 of this stage has already been secured, while other areas are in the process of being reviewed, tested and put into operation.

This was explained by the Director General of Integrated Project Management at the Diversion Engineering Services Enterprise, Roberto Pupo Verdecia, to the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in a recent check on the progress of the hydraulic program. / Granma
