Cinema, Art and Fiesta in Gibara

The 14th Gibara International Film Festival, created by the late Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solas, will be held from July 1st to the 7th in the eastern town, Holguin province, with an avalanche of different artists, this year dedicated to children and adolescents.
The President of the event, actor Jorge Perugorria praised on Tuesday before the press, the memory of Solas whose inspiration is felt among the organizers of the annual festival and the locals of the town of Gibara.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of the main promoter of the project also known as low income cinema in Gibara and the 50th of the classic films Lucia and Memories of Underdevelopment, a special tribute will be held to Solas and Tomas Gutierrez Alea with the projection of both films.
The advisor to the President and founder of the Festival, Sergio Benvenuto Solas explained at Havana’s Fresa y Chocolate Cultural Center on the evolution, in particular of this year’s edition regarding quality and variety of the film proposals in competition that include participants from all the continents.
He explained that the films will be accompanied of presentations headed by its main representatives and the presence of renowned international figures like Felix Viscarret, Demian Bichir, Ana de Armas and Benicio del Toro is guaranteed.
The “Lucia of Honor” will be granted to renowned director Enrique Pineda Barnet and actress Mirtha Medina and actor Salvador Wood. The traditional public award will be given as well as recognition of the Antonio Nunez Jimenez Foundation to films related to the environment.
Benvenuto Solas announced an intense program of collateral activities where music will be an important aspect of the event with an inaugural concert by singer/songwriter Silvio Rodriguez with the closing by Argentinean Fito Paez and performances by Kelvis Ochoa, Raul Paz and Polito Ibanez.
The visual arts will also have a space in the festival with a total of 13 exhibitions, theater which will include the piece Humo by Yunior Garcia, La Cita by Osvaldo Doimeadios and the participation of renowned companies from Holguin with performances for all ages. / ACN
