Radiological safety researches in the province of Holguín extend in 2018 towards natural radioactive sources resulting from different industrial processes.

The researches include the particles resulting from the smelting of scrap metal, the burning of fossil fuels and the fertilizer industry, said Ramiro Velázquez, a specialist at the Center for Environmental Studies (CISAT) in the eastern territory.

He pointed out that radioactive materials are also found in the manufacturing processes of construction materials such as ceramics and refractory bricks.

Velázquez explained that the studies allow defining where these wastes go and if exposure levels are permissible to ensure the safety of workers and managers exposed to the particles.

He stressed that these industrial wastes can not be defined as dangerous, although it is necessary to maintain effective radiological monitoring systems for their control.

Radioactive natural sources can also be found in underground mines, basaltic rocks, caves and closed premises, Velázquez added.

The radiological safety studies in Holguín include the dosimetry for the treatment of cancer patients, which helps to increase their quality of life and reduces the exposure rates to radioactive components. / ACN
