The Chinese Colony of Holguín celebrated its 90th anniversary this weekend with a wide program of activities that included tributes, research presentations, exhibitions, traditional dances and parades.

The agenda included the 12th edition of the Event "Chinese presence in Holguín province" at the institution's headquarters, aimed at highlighting the extensive legacy of the Asian country in the history and culture of this eastern region.

The event, which brought together natives, descendants and those interested in the subject, brought to mind the work of the late President Gloria Chin Alonso as a cultural promoter, whose management marked the beginning of the mandate of the descendants, since until now it had been directed only by the natives, told ACN Narciso Hung, acting president of the Association of Descendants of the Colony in Holguín.

The nearly 170 members that make up the Colony are committed to continuing to defend the history and traditions inherited from their ancestors, as well as maintaining the link with the Holguín culture defended by Gloria, he added.

In their research, Georgelina Miranda Peláez and Indira Riverón Pérez, recalled the traces left in social and economic activity in the territory through shopping centers such as La Oriental, Cantonese entrepreneurship, and other services associated to the commercialization of vegetables, handicrafts and the pharmacy, carried out by Carlos Chiong Cruz.

For his part, Dr. José Sanjurjo identified the multiple stages of medical care and related health promotion to Chinese medicine and its preventive work based on observation.

On the other hand the research “The Treasure of the Blooming Plum. Chinese-Cuban traditions of the Ley Pin family”, by Maura Ley Pin and Rosa María Acosta, reflected the durability of Chinese traditions and the process of transculturation of customs within the family, expressed mainly in the culinary recipe book from the influence of Cuban and Spanish cuisine.

Among the activities it stood out the exhibitions "Ave Fénix", by the creation group Los dragoncillos and "IX decades of the Chinese Colony", by Maura Ley Pin, historian of this institution, who outlined the development of Chinese culture from the arrival of the first emigrants to date.

The old Marketa Square, today part of the Plaza de La Marqueta Cultural Complex, witnessed the constitution of the Association of Descendants of the Chinese Colony, in 1932, with Ignacio Wong as its first president, commented Maura Ley Pin.

The sale of vegetables and Chinese porcelain in the Plaza used to bring together the countrymen, who had to legalize the organization when warned by the authorities of the time, she added.
