The 25th edition of the Romerias de Mayo begins today with the traditional parade of the participating delegations and the climb to the top of Loma de la Cruz to place the ax of Holguin, symbol of the city.

The cultural event, organized by the Sainz Brothers Association in the northeastern province, will be officially inaugurated at the Calixto García Park with the participation of more than a hundred delegates from some 17 countries.

This time dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the beginning of Cuban independence struggles and the bicentenary of Karl Marx, the meeting brings together artists and intellectuals in a festival that every year turns the city of parks into the capital of young art.

Artists from Argentina, Mexico and Canada, among other countries will be sharing with young creators from the Caribbean nation.

Thursday’s agenda includes the opening conference of the Memoria Nuestra Congress on the 25 years of the Romerias by Alexis Triana, one of the founders of this important cultural event.

The cultural space Camara Azul will be dedicated to the Cuban audiovisual production in its most contemporary version, while the exhibition “El Caribe Ming: Imagen, caligrafía, verso” by the plastic arts teacher Flora Fong will honor a new edition of Babel.

The Romerías de Mayo, celebrated for the first time in 1993, revive a rite born on May 3, 1790 when Father Antonio Alegría placed a wooden cross on top of Cerro Bayado, today Loma de la Cruz, in order to celebrate a Hispanic religious tradition.
