Geominera Oriente Company in Holguín consolidates as zeolite exporter

The Geominera Oriente Company exports to countries in America and Europe the zeolite extracted from the San Andrés deposit, in Holguín, whose product has been certified as well as the quality management system.
Belonging to the Geominera Holguín Business Unit (UEB), the plant has benefited from a maintenance and investment process that allows responding to the demands of the national market and export.
Arturo Sacerio Martínez, commercial management specialist at Geominera Oriente, told the Cuban News Agency that the Company can produce more than 20,000 tons annually, of excellent quality.
He added that the Cuban Zeolite Workshop is convened every two year, with the participation of foreign delegates, but due to the COVD-19 pandemic, the event corresponding to 2021 could not be held and the aspiration is to develop it in the present for the update on its exploitation and use with the participation of researchers, producers and marketers.
For example, he said, it is used in agriculture for soil improvement, since it has the capacity to retain gases, water and nutrients and also release these elements for the benefit of plants.
Also in the production of animal feed, as organic fertilizer and in the bedding of commercially farmed poultry and pigs, due to the possibilities of absorbing liquids and bad odors caused by waste, while controlling the development of microorganisms and insects, said Arturo Sacerio.
Zeolite is also applied in the clarification of water and liquids, as a fungicide in grape crops, in the production of detergents and in the pharmaceutical industry to make dietary supplements for human consumption, in skin treatments (antifungal powders) and gastrointestinal conditions.
The specialist pointed out that the San Andrés plant produces an ecological fertilizer with the registered trademark Nerea, the result of an agreement and technology transfer with the University of Havana, which is marketed in agriculture in the eastern region and has prospects of being included in the portfolio of exportable products.
Empresa Geominera Oriente supplies other items such as calcium carbonate, packaged mortar, medicinal mining mud, bentonite and volcanic glass.
In addition, assortments derived from minerals for use in the home and for hygiene and beauty, with a wide demand in the population, from deposits located in this region of the country, among them talcum powder and antiseptic, cleaning powder and paste, powder and facial mask and others for gardening and fish tanks.
Recently incorporated are the descaling agent, cleansing gel and shaving lotion. In the case of the pigments used in slabs, mosaics and paints, the Company is engaged in color diversification to meet the demands.
