The Commander of the Revolution and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, analyzed the indicators of nickel production in the municipality of Moa, and investments in the thermal units located in the Lidio Ramón Pérez Thermoelectric Company, located in the town of Felton, Mayarí, decisives in the development of the national economy.
In an exchange with the local authorities and directors and workers of the nickel processing plants Ernesto Che Guevara and Pedro Soto Alba, Valdés Menéndez became interested in the productive rhythm in this sector, as well as the factors that intervene in the processing of this mineral which constitutes an exportable ruble of great importance for the economic sustainability of the country.
He was also informed on the progress of the exports and imports in these branches, mainly the delays due to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US Government on the island for six decades, although its workers stood out innovation and rationalization efforts to keep the production of its main indicators.
Likewise, the Cuban Deputy Prime Minister checked the working, salary and training conditions of the workers, and pointed out the integrality that must exist in all processes that intervene in this important activity, among them, the university-company relationship.
Valdés Menéndez also recognized the contribution of this industry to local and national development, as good results should contribute to improving the conditions of its locals, thus avoiding the exodus of the inhabitants to other territories.
After visiting the nickel industries of Moa, the Commander of the Revolution assessed the investments made in the thermal units of the Lidio Ramón Pérez Thermoelectric Company in the town of Felton, in the Holguín municipality of Mayarí, the second with the highest generation capacity in the country.
In his visit to this facility, he highlighted the importance of the comprehensive rehabilitation project carried out in the Unit 1, whose investment exceeded 186 million pesos, which included the total change of the turbine and the capital repair of the generator, in addition to the replacement of the water walls of the boiler furnace, as well as all the basic auxiliary equipment of this structure.
He also learned about the replacement of the plant's automatic and electrical control systems, auxiliary equipment mounted on the boiler, burners and forced draft fans for ventilation; and boiler blowers to keep it clean.
This block delivered its first stable generation last July after a serious breakdown that took it out of service since 2016, and is currently in the adjustment and start-up stage with an installed power of 260 MW, synchronized to the national electro energy system.
Valdés Menéndez examined the partial maintenance work carried out in Unit 2, with a power of 250 MW, which also has a 184 MW fuel oil generator set in the municipality of Moa, for a total power of 694 MW in general.
During his visit to these facilities of socio-economic interest, Ramiro Valdés Menéndez was accompanied by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province of Holguín, and Julio César Estupiñán Rodríguez, Governor in the eastern territory.
