cupeycilloPhoto: Radio AnguloA program to reduce the vulnerability of rural communities in the province of Holguin to the effects of climate change will be implemented from 2018 in this eastern territory, as part of the Tarea Vida project.

The project includes the community of Resbaladero, located in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, about 15 kilometers from the provincial capital, which shelters endemic species of fauna and flora, susceptible to environmental variations.

With an estimated duration of three to five years, the research will include the development of mitigation strategies, materialized in the training of inhabitants in the region, said to the ACN Katherine Guerra, deputy director of science, technology and innovation at the Research Center and Environmental Services.

According to Guerra the program also includes the determination of crops, livestock and forestry activities that can best adapt to conditions such as increased temperatures and intense drought.

This study will also include an overview of the changes in climate over the last 50 years and the history of the community, added Guerra.

Tarea Vida is a project of the Cuban government to address climate change, which generates effects such as severe drought, rising of the sea level and salinization of groundwater. It comprises 73 localities prioritized for implementation.

Holguin shows evidences of climate variability, among them the increase of the minimum annual temperature and the impact of high intensity hurricanes, for which the coastal municipalities of Antilla, Banes, Rafael Freyre, Gibara, Frank Pais, Mayari and Moa, are included within this strategy.
