The healthcare system in Holguín prioritizes care for pregnant women, especially those living in rural or hard-to-reach areas, as part of programs focused on vulnerable populations.

Care begins at the primary level through family doctor and nurse offices, ensuring early monitoring of pregnancy, said Yelena Rodríguez Rodríguez, head of the Obstetrics area in the maternal and child section of the General Directorate of the sector.

Pregnant women are admitted to maternity homes starting at 34 weeks of gestation to facilitate timely assistance in case of labor and to reduce risks. In areas with more complex geographic conditions, such as Sagua de Tánamo and regions within the Plan Turquino, admission begins at 32 weeks to provide greater protection.

Despite economic limitations, health authorities continue to make sustained efforts to ensure quality care for both mother and newborn.

The province currently has more than 3,000 pregnant women, six maternity homes, and specialized teams in all municipalities, along with services at both primary and secondary levels of care.

More complex cases are treated at the maternity unit of the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital, where pregnancies with associated conditions are managed.

Despite geographic challenges in several mountainous areas, Holguín consistently maintains one of the lowest infant mortality rates in Cuba, with more than 5,000 births annually. (Source: ACN)
