Holguín prepares for the start of the 2026-2027 School Year

The education sector in Holguín is preparing for the start of the 2026–2027 school year on September 1, focusing on securing the necessary material, human, and methodological resources.
The province will serve more than 131,000 students through a network of over 1,300 schools and other educational facilities, according to Luis Felipe Batista Rodríguez, the provincial director of education.
In response to the national energy situation, 156 educational zones were created in local community councils to decentralize resource coordination and maintain students’ in-person attendance.
Some students will also be moved to schools closer to where they live. At boarding schools and Technical and Vocational Education centers, classrooms will be enabled, distance learning will be offered, and practical training placements will be expanded.
Teacher shortages remain a major challenge, particularly in lower secondary education, Technical and Vocational Education, Mathematics, and English. To address this, authorities will use hourly contracts, teachers in training, increased workloads, and the hiring of university students and education majors.
Primary education will remain fully in person, although eight schools damaged by Hurricane Melissa in 2025 will operate in a single shift while repairs continue. Early Childhood and Special Education have the conditions needed to receive boarding students and maintain essential services.
Notebooks and pencils have been secured, and the distribution of some uniforms for first- and fifth-grade students has already begun. Priority will also be given to vulnerable children, school repairs, and the use of technology, educational films, and interactive books to improve learning quality. (Source: ACN)
