With the incorporation of medical students into the family doctors and nurses program, the province of Holguín is strengthening primary healthcare amidst the energy crisis currently affecting the country.

The decision responds to adjustments aimed at continuing the training processes at the University of Medical Sciences in the current context and promoting the quality preparation of future doctors, said George Velázquez Zúñiga, rector of the university.

Students will carry out screening activities, monitoring of vulnerable populations, and providing medical care in hard-to-reach areas, all essential to their professional development. In addition, they have options to continue their educational process with adjustments to the academic calendar, where self-study is essential.

Velázquez commented that third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students will be assigned to hospitals and polyclinics in the 14 municipalities of the eastern province and will have tutors assigned to them to support their activities. Students residing in remote areas will receive differentiated support through online learning, using digital resources.

Holguín has more than a thousand medical offices with a program designed to address 70 percent of health problems at the primary care level. (Source: ACN)
