The municipality of Cacocum, in Holguín province, shows achievements in maternal and child healthcare program, with indicators such as zero neonatal mortality by the end of 2025.

The territory is characterized by having most of its health areas in rural and hard-to-reach areas, which requires implementing a comprehensive care system with highly trained specialists, said Lisbeth Leyva Fontón, municipal director of Health.

She commented that, despite resource limitations, follow-up care is guaranteed for high-risk pregnant women and those with gestational diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

She added that through community-based interventions, stable access to specialties such as pediatrics, obstetrics, and internal medicine is maintained, and new specialists continue to be trained in these fields.

Leyva Fontón noted that for 22 years, the municipality has not achieved a zero infant mortality rate or complete control of adolescent pregnancies, areas in which family doctors and nurses play a crucial role.

The municipality also ensures the transportation of pregnant women nearing term and their admission to the maternity home, one of the priorities of the Integrated Medical Emergency System, she highlighted.

Cacocum reports other positive results in the health sector, such as the control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and prevention efforts against sexually transmitted infections and chronic diseases. (Source: ACN)
