A premature baby girl, born at 32 weeks and weighing 1,462 grams, was saved at the Regional Neonatal Surgery Center in Holguín thanks to the efforts of a multidisciplinary medical team.

The baby, from Bayamo in Granma province, was born with two severe digestive malformations—an esophageal atresia and an anorectal anomaly—both potentially fatal if not treated urgently.

Given the seriousness of the case, specialists performed an emergency surgery to repair the esophageal atresia. During the procedure, they successfully joined the two ends of the esophagus and restored the continuity of the digestive tract, allowing the infant to be fed through a tube.

Dr. Yanet Hidalgo Marrero, head of the surgical department, explained that a second operation is still pending to correct the anorectal anomaly. Although this procedure is also complex, the baby can temporarily defecate thanks to a natural fistula until the next surgery.

The newborn is currently under the intensive care of neonatologists and specialized nurses who closely monitor her condition, Hidalgo Marrero added.

The medical team, composed of young professionals experienced in complex surgeries and low-birth-weight infants, reflects the center’s high level of expertise.

The Holguín Regional Neonatal Surgery Center has maintained high survival rates for over five years and serves newborns from Granma, Las Tunas, Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, and the host province, performing surgery within the first hours of life to correct various malformations.
