0823 dtora yadeli escalonaThe ophthalmology service at the Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Pediatric Hospital has incorporated new surgical procedures using techniques that have improved the quality of life of patients in the province of Holguin.

These surgeries are performed using minimally invasive procedures for conditions such as cataracts, which guarantees a faster recovery for infants, Yaidelín Escalona Almarales, head of that service at the institution, told the Cuban News Agency.
The condition, the doctor explained, is one of the most common and causes visual impairments if not corrected in a timely manner, hence the importance of incorporating these techniques into treatment protocols.

She noted that these alternatives reduce the complexity of the interventions and facilitate the implementation of research and innovation in the face of the shortage of supplies caused by the intensification of the United States economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba.
The specialist highlighted the fundamental importance of human capital and the constant improvement of multidisciplinary teams of professionals in relation to scientific advances adapted to the conditions of each case.

Among the procedures, pupilloplasty stands out, which consists of an incision to aspirate the lens and has been performed since February 2025 with the support of professionals from the Territorial Ophthalmology Center of the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical and Surgical Hospital, added Escalona Almarales, who also holds a master’s degree in Medical Education.
Ophthalmology is the specialty that studies eye diseases and their treatment, including the eyeball, its muscles, the tear system, and the eyelids.

In pediatrics, it ranges from routine eye exams to surgeries that correct complex problems, such as congenital cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity, where Holguin demonstrates multiple advances in the recovery of children. (Source : ACN)
