The Casa de Iberoamérica and the Provincial Directorate of Culture convene the first Jazz Festival in Holguín from March 11 to 14, 2021, which will include a contest to promote creation and performance in young people under 35 years of age.

The event extended its call until next year due to the health situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the country and will be held on the indicated date if epidemiological conditions allow it, said its director Jimmy Ochoa Escalona.

It will be dedicated to local musicians Joel Rodríguez Milord and Julio Avilés, for their effort to maintain the tradition of the genre in the province and will include lectures, talks and audiovisual screening.

The Festival aims to promote the exchange between the students of the art school system, young musicians and those who cultivate the genre, showing the relevance of Cuban novel jazz and reviving the more than half a century of tradition of this genre in the region, Ochoa said.

All national and foreign jazz players aged between 16 and 35 can participate in the Contest and it is not an essential requirement that they have attended an academy or institution of artistic education, but Cuban participants must be members of the country's system of cultural institutions, such as the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) or the Cuban Institute of Music.

Participants will be able to compete in the small format category, which includes vocal, instrumental or the union of both, with a jazz standard, a free theme or a piece by a Cuban composer, he explained.

The event, which will be attended by renowned musicians such as Gerardo Piloto, Ramón Valle, Michael Herrera and William Roblejo, is the continuity of the genre in a city that has held events such as Holjazz and La Esquina del Jazz, the latter in the Romerías de Mayo.
