More than 150 artists and intellectuals from 16 countries are meeting from today in the eastern province of Holguín, convened by the 25th Ibero-American Culture Festival.

The event brings together the most diverse artistic expressions: plastic arts, dance, cinema and music, among others, in addition to various theoretical conferences.

The event has the participation of delegates from Peru, Colombia, Spain, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Ecuador, India, Italy, the United States, Panama, Chile, Haiti, El Salvador and Guatemala.

According to the director of Casa de Iberoamérica and president of the organizing committee for the event, Eduardo Ávila, this year’s edition aims to highlight the importance of the Caribbean in Latin America.

Cuba is an active member of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), an organization with the purpose of identifying and promoting consultation, cooperation and concerted actions among all countries in the region.

The festival will officially begin with a cultural gala to be held at the Eddy Suñol Theater, with the performance of the renowned pianist and composer Frank Fernández and the Codanza Company.

Several activities of the official program will pay tribute to the Spanish poet Benito Pérez Galdós in the centenary of his death; to Cuban Major General Calixto García on the 180th anniversary of his birth and Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, regarding the 60 years of his physical disappearance.

The Ibero-American Culture Festival began to be held in Cuba in 1992 based on the growing relations of this Caribbean country with the nations of Latin America.

The program of this meeting, from October 24 to 30, includes the 14th Ibero-American Congress of Thought, with the participation of speakers from the United States, El Salvador, Italy, Mexico and Costa Rica.

The Ibero-American Colloquium of Letters, personal and collective exhibitions of plastic arts, an Ibero-American Audiovisual Exhibition, community and socio-cultural animation projects, and a Fiesta Campesina (Peasant Festival) are also among the activities of the event.

The Ibero-American Fiesta also includes concerts, workshops and the Iberoarte International Crafts Fair, which is attended by more than 60 artisans from nine countries with works to exhibit and market.
