The Holguin poet Ronel Gonzalez Sanchez deserved the National Prize Scholarship Ciudad del Che 2019, organized by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) of Santa Clara, for his poetry book “¿Cómo se manda un campamento?” which addresses the independence wars of the nineteenth century in Cuba.
Gonzalez Sanchez is passionate about the topic, as he is the great-grandson of Captain Mambi Pedro, under the command of Major General Calixto Garcia.
On this topic, he also wrote the book Teoría del fulgor accesorio, a re-visit from the decima to the History of Cuba and the poetry book La marcha de la bandera, a book inspired by heroes and historical events of the 19th century.
“I am not a pure historian, I am a poet who writes about history. I have tried to investigate from poetry in the Cuban independence world. I'm interested in other times, but this is so vast and deep that it is complex and I stayed in it, ” he said.
The award will be officially delivered on October 6 at the Mausoleum of Che Guevara, in Villa Clara.
The Holguin poet has received important awards such as the Raul Ferrer Prize for the Work of Life, as a promoter of reading, and the National Prize Francisco (Paco) Mir in Poetry, as well as a Mention in Literature for Children, convened by the UNEAC of Isla de la Juventud, for the book Clavar en la cruz.
