Professor and playwright Carlos Leyva Bonaga won the Alberto Dávalos 2019 Award for a life dedicated to the stage, a tribute he received at the Eddy Suñol Theater in the province of Holguín, on March 27, World Theater Day.
The actor Fernando Gil, the soprano and director of the Rodrigo Prats Lyric Theater, María Dolores Rodríguez and the actor and producer René Bruzón made up the jury that evaluated the nominations for this award, which was granted to Bonaga for his extensive and fruitful life as a playwright, theater director and teacher.
"This is the first time I have been recognized for my life's work, here in my own land, where I did not complete my entire career, because I worked in Santiago de Cuba, Granma and other provinces. However, I have been living here for 12 years and now I lead the Jácara group and I teach workshops in the Center for Improvement, "said Bonaga.
He commented that the award is an important boost for his professional career of almost 50 years, of which he has devoted much time to teaching at the School of Art Instructors and the branch of the University of the Arts in Holguin.
At the award granting ceremony, the actress Rocío Pérez Pavón, distinguished with the City Prize 2019, read the International Message for the World Theater Day that each year the International Theater Institute, attached to the UNESCO, requests a renowned cultural figure.
For the first time, the request was made to a Cuban: the dramatist, stage director, theater educator and director of the Argos Teatro group, Carlos Celdrán, who reflected on the meaning of the theater work.
Among the nominees for the "Alberto Dávalos" Award were the founder, first dancer and choreographer of the Codanza Company, Vianky González; the founder and director of the La Campana Folk Company, Francisco Griñán Sánchez (Chichío); the stagehand Herenio Pérez Nápoles and the lyrical singer Alfredo Más.
The Provincial Center for the Performing Arts of Holguín instituted since 2000 the award that recognizes and stimulates the dedication to the theatrical work of the territory and as a tribute to the artist and indefatigable creator that bears the name of the award, who dedicated his life to the lyrical scene and performance.
